#230: March 14, 2012

Hugo

Attending:
  • Marty
  • Justin
  • Craig
  • Adam
Dinner:  Burgers.  The weather was a record-setting 81 degrees today, so we grilled burgers and generally had a big old time.  Also, celebrated Adam's having found a new job.

These weren't just any burgers, though.  Marty ground the meat himself, and while you probably can't see it in the photo, he actually ground raw bacon into the beef.  It was delicious; didn't really have a bacon flavor, but got some of that wonderful smokiness and body without being overbearing.

Delicacy or carnage? You make the call.

P.S.  Marty replaced the propane canister on the grill's starter tonight.  I record this so we can note the next time it runs out and figure out how long a canister lasts.

Null set

March 7, 2012:  No movie night.  Adam was too sick to move.  Unconfirmed reports indicate that a pod of scabs gathered at Marty's place, but it is generally agreed that this did not constitute an official Movie Night.

#229: February 29, 2012

A special movie for Leap Day: The pants-shittingly badass 13 Assassins.  Seriously, this movie is so metal, it makes iron look like astatine.

Attending:
  • Marty
  • Justin
  • Craig
  • Elizabeth
  • Adam
Dinner:  Cincinnati chili.  Nobody else wanted seconds, so Adam ate all the rest of it, which turned out to be quite a lot of food.  I regret nothing!

Dinner:  Spaghetti with incredible meat sauce, salad, and garlic bread.  Nothing too fancy, but good and hearty and delicious.  I think it's safe to say we all felt like this was one of the best movie night meals ever.

And we DESTROYED it.

After the movie we had video-chat with DL from Nashville.  As you can see, he's doing awesome.

At last:  Citizen Kane

Attending:
  • Marty
  • Kristi
  • Elizabeth
  • Justin
  • Craig
  • Adam
Dinner:  Something called "Country Captain," which claims to be a Georgia dish, but this Georgian has never heard of it.  Maybe it's a Low Country thing?  Anyway, it was fantastic.  Chicken, fried then simmered in a tomato-curry sauce and served over rice.  Terrific.

I can't wait for warm weather and long daylight, so I can take more interesting photos at movie night.  I'm starting to think we should have a staged portrait every week, so we can watch ourselves age over the years.  Thoughts, anyone?

Island of Lost Souls

Attending:
  • Marty
  • Justin
  • Kristi
  • Craig
  • Adam

Dinner:  Ravioli and meat sauce from Fino's, plus fresh bread and spinach from Marty's kitchen.

Marty and Adam are both not quite done being horribly sick.  Marty, in his infinite mercy, picked a movie that was barely over an hour long so we could all get some sleep.  Awesome flick, though.

Murder by Death

Attending:
  • Marty
  • Justin
  • Craig
  • Adam
Dinner: Hot dogs with jalapeños and Monterey Jack cheese built in.  The jalapeños were a bit intense for some, but others enjoy the sensation of sweating out of the crowns of their heads.

Marty made these once before, but this time the jalapeños were way bigger and he left the seeds (source of the capsaicin) intact.  Hot damn.

Because the next day was Adam's 40th birthday, we got a little crazy.  Marty made fantastic crab/shrimp/sausage stew, and there was prosecco and other terrific wine, and we had a bonfire out back after the movie.

A few photos after the jump:

Dinner: Grilled pork tenderloin with a lime-honey-garlic-chipotle marinade, sweet potatoes with chipotle, and greens cooked with a whole goddam turkey in the pot.  Also, bacon cornbread.

Now that the play's run is finished, I'm hoping to have more time for what's important in life, like more episodes of "Cooking with Marty."

Sorry, I meant to say "webisodes," because I have time for useless portmanteaux.

Flowers on the dinner table.  Because we are not savages.

Keep on eatin'.

Movie:  The Magnificent Ambersons

Attending:

  • Marty
  • Craig
  • Adam
Dinner:  "Eggs in Purgatory," aka uova al purgatorio. With crispy polenta cakes. Hot damn.

Marty also started using a wine-tracker app that will let us keep a much better record of what wines we try and how well we like them.  Once we get a bit of a database built up I'll post a link to our wine history.

For a while it looked as though we might not have movie night after all.  A transformer down the street from Marty's house had somehow blown out, and this particular rise of the machines meant no one on his block had power.  Then the power came on, but then MLGW showed up and said they had to shut it off again.  We had no idea what was going on, but pretty soon it came on and stayed on.

I took a lot of blurry, dark pictures.

MLGW truck.
