Dinner: Something called "Country Captain," which claims to be a Georgia dish, but this Georgian has never heard of it. Maybe it's a Low Country thing? Anyway, it was fantastic. Chicken, fried then simmered in a tomato-curry sauce and served over rice. Terrific.

I can't wait for warm weather and long daylight, so I can take more interesting photos at movie night. I'm starting to think we should have a staged portrait every week, so we can watch ourselves age over the years. Thoughts, anyone?

Dinner: Hot dogs with jalapeños and Monterey Jack cheese built in. The jalapeños were a bit intense for some, but others enjoy the sensation of sweating out of the crowns of their heads.

Marty made these once before, but this time the jalapeños were way bigger and he left the seeds (source of the capsaicin) intact. Hot damn.

Marty also started using a wine-tracker app that will let us keep a much better record of what wines we try and how well we like them. Once we get a bit of a database built up I'll post a link to our wine history.

For a while it looked as though we might not have movie night after all. A transformer down the street from Marty's house had somehow blown out, and this particular rise of the machines meant no one on his block had power. Then the power came on, but then MLGW showed up and said they had to shut it off again. We had no idea what was going on, but pretty soon it came on and stayed on.

I mostly keep silent about the movies we watch at movie night, but hot damn this was fantastic. To paraphrase something or other: If you only see one no-budget movie this year about a sentient tire that kills with its mind and eventually takes out, on-screen, the audience that's watching this very movie, let it be this one.

Movie night will be held on Sundays for a while. Adam is going to be in a play and will have rehearsals five nights a week for a while, so until early October we're convening on Sundays. One shudders to contemplate the effect this may have on football season.

The amazing new Criterion Blu-Ray of Modern Times

Dinner: Was amazing. Marty had spent a week making homemade pastrami, and we had Reuben sandwiches involving the pastrami, from-scratch onion rye bread, homemade Russian dressing, and deli sauerkraut. (Actually, because it was pastrami and not corned beef, I'm told this sandwich is called a "Rachel.")

We started off with a bottle of Coppola's "Sofia" Rosé because of the crazy-making heat wave, then moved on to some rich German/Czech beers with the meal.

And afterward we listened to favorite opera arias and blew stuff up. Did you know that the gloves firemen wear can safely protect you from a bottle rocket exploding in your hand? Well, they can.

Movie night has a milestone coming up in two weeks. There was discussion of how to mark the occasion.

Santi 20007 Valpolicella. We were really excited about this one; it's a ripasso, and valpolicella tends to be perfect with pizza. But this was just kind of flat. Nothing really wrong with it, but nothing especially right with it either. For $17 we can do better.

DL is always talking about how much he likes montepulciano d'Abruzzo, and I can't argue with him on this. This was a home run, sharp where it needed to be sharp and soft where it need to be that. Very grape-y flavor, if that's not too stupid a thing to say.

"Who's going to fight me for the last piece?"

And a video, shot on my phone. I didn't put much effort into this one, obviously, but I guess that's the peril of being the one who obsessively chronicles things. This was during a break in the movie.

I'm going to start cataloging the wines we have as well, as that's become a big part of the Movie Night experience. This week:

Charles Krug 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon. Excellent, hearty and rich and complex. Generally agreed to be a solid 9.

337 2007 Cabernet Sauvignon. Another good table wine, not quite as distinctive as the Krug. At $16, I think we can do significantly better for the price.

Marlborough "Cupcake" 2009 Sauvignon Blanc. This was a wonder, light and fruity but not cloying the way a Sauvignon Blanc can be. One sip and I said "It's like I'm at a fancy lawn-party in the springtime."

Weird movie night this week.

Marty made this insanely good meal of scallops, Brussels sprouts, and bacon.

We started off with bellinis, then ate this wonderful food, and then as we were cleaning up a bit and preparing to watch the movie, the power went out.

You can't watch a movie with the power out, of course, so we did the obvious next choice: Go outside to drink champagne and set shit on fire in the rain.

We didn't end up watching a movie, but it was definitely a memorable movie night.

From Julia Child's recipe, we ate horseradish-crusted grouper with old-fashioned mashed potatoes, chive oil, and crisp-fried julienne of leeks.

The night also marked the first time we've watched a movie on Netflix streaming video. Quality: Not bad. The sound isn't as great as a Blu-Ray, but with Burden of Dreams it didn't really matter.
